How is HIV spread?

HIV is spread through exchange of bodily fluids. This occurs most often during sex, including oral and anal sex. HIV can also be transmitted by sharing needles or a pregnant woman to her unborn baby.

There is no cure for HIV and no vaccine to prevent infection. However, since the 1990s, treatments have been developed that allow most people with HIV to stay healthy and live a relatively normal life.
