Twenty-five million people have already died of AIDS since the virus appeared. There are about 38.6 million people living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which is also the leading cause of AIDS. HIV damages the cells that make up the immune system, causing the body’s inability to protect against fungi, viruses and bacteria that fix the disease.
