HIV/AIDS in Canada

More than two decades after its emergence, HIV / AIDS remains an enormous challenge in Canada and around the world.

The Government of Canada is committed to a comprehensive, long-term fight against HIV / AIDS, both nationally and internationally. Canada’s objectives are to prevent new infections, slow disease progression and improve quality of life, reduce social and economic impact of HIV / AIDS and contribute to the overall effort.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is responsible for overall coordination of the Federal Initiative to combat HIV / AIDS in Canada. The Federal Initiative – a collaboration between the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Correctional Service of Canada – Canada is working to eliminate the Canadian HIV / AIDS and the conditions under behind Canadians are vulnerable to the epidemic. In addition to coordination (including joint planning, monitoring and evaluation), the Public Health Agency of Canada is responsible for HIV / AIDS, communication, social marketing, national and regional programs, the policy development, monitoring , laboratory science and global engagement on the basis of technical assistance and policy advice.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is also the leader for overall coordination of the Canadian Initiative for HIV Vaccine (CHVI). The CHVI is a collaborative effort between the Public Health Agency of Canada, Industry Canada, Health Canada, Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Canadian International Development and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Agency coordinates and supervises the management structures CHVI and facilitate collaboration with national and international organizations, which acts as a focal point for implementation and provides administrative support.
